Can My Products Help In Combating COVID-19?

In December 2019, Wuhan City of Hubei Province, China first reported the emergence of a novel coronavirus outbreak named “Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2” (SARS-CoV-2), the cause of the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) a pandemic threat to global health (1). According to the World Health Organization (WHO) the detailed information provided on the global spread of COVID-19 around the world as pandemic, as of December 2020, the outbreak had spread to more than 215 countries, with > 72,645,205 confirmed cases and > 1,616,908 confirmed deaths cases (2). To date (as per 3rd June 2021), there are close to 600,000 total confirmed COVID-19 cases in Malaysia with around 80,000 total active cases. There are around 500,000 total recovered cases and more than 3,000 total deaths nationwide. COVID-19 patients can be classified into 5 stages as listed in Table 1. Each stage will display different clinical symptoms and require different treatment protocols (3)

Current treatments target the viral and inflammation stage. For the viral stage, antiviral drugs are under investigation, none has been proven to be efficient so far. Note that antiviral drugs must be applied early in the disease to be effective. Existing potential antiviral compounds such as remdesivir, chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine and interferon-beta showing most promising therapeutic effects against infection. For the inflammation stage, antibodies against IL-6 are potent in reducing inflammation in late stages and anticoagulants seem effective in preventing blood-clotting. 


Currently various studies and reports are available on use of natural compounds, traditional medicine or supplements to COVID-19 treatment and preventions (4). For example, Lianhua Qingwen capsules shown to exert effective antiviral effects and other herbs have been proven to have a wide spectrum of antiviral and immunomodulatory effects and also known to have effective treatment against COVID-19. The current research data showed that various products and their combinations had effective treatment options for COVID-19. The synergistic effect of these products with Western medicine also used as an effective treatment for COVID-19 (5).
